Merida is located 20 minutes from Progreso. Progreso is a port city located on the Gulf of Mexico. It is one of the largest cities in the state, with 49,454 inhabitants, including other small towns, since Progreso is the municipality as well.
Progreso’s municipality includes Scorpion Reef, including the five islets, Chicxulub Puerto, Campestre, Flamboyanes, and Chelem.
Progreso is the main port in Yucatan in the fishing and container industries. All containers that arrive in Progreso are distributed to the rest of the peninsula. This port has been receiving cruise ships for several years, bringing tourists to disembark and taking them for a visit to several points in Progreso, Merida, or the archaeological sites of Dzibilchaltum, which is located 10 minutes from Merida.
During the months of summer, the beaches are filled with thousands of local tourists looking to enjoy the ocean and other outdoor water activities.
